A lot of my students know quite a bit about social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and they also put Pinterest in the pot. That's why I decided to write this post. Many of them are very astound when I tell them that Pinterest is not a social media platform, Pinterest is a search engine.
Why is Pinterest a Search Engine
Whenever you go look for something, an idea for a decoration, a recipe, any tip or blog about a specific subject where do you go? Do you check Facebook or Twitter. Most likely not. You go check on Pinterest. Pinterest works like google, you type what you are looking for and you get suggestions.
So just imagine you have an online course about Gluten Free cooking. Would it not be a good place to put your information on Pinterest and show up when people google Gluten Free cooking? I believe it would. For this to happen, you need to put a couple of things in place though. Pinterest need to know that you are serious about your business and you have valuable content. So, how do you need to get started?

What is special about rich pins?
Article rich pins show the title, a description, publish date, and the author’s name. In the feed, the article Pin shows the title of the post. You will see the additional information when you click on the Pin.
This means, when you get your pin ready you can add keywords, hashtags, a description, and you have the link to your website or course site. This way, when your pin gets in front of people they have all the information they need to get to your article, sign up or course page.
Bonus: On social media, the lifespan of your post would be very short. This is not the case for Pinterest. Your pins can circulate with all the information even after months whereas on twitter or Instagram they would already be buried for months. Make sure that you create a style that you will use for your pins. Pick 2, maximum 3 colors that you use. Create a template that you adept and re-use. Add your call to action information on your pin so that people see you have a free gift for them. Work with pictures, a picture says a thousand words.
Add the "Pinterest Pin It Button on Image Hover and After Post & Page Content" plugin on your WordPress blog and this way you or others can pin from your site.
