online course

Getting your online course out doesn’t have to be hard: this is what keeps you from it!

Get your online course out perfection is the enemy of

Let's be honest: how long are you already contemplating the idea of getting that online course out?

Are you thinking about that course? Do you know exactly what to put in? Do you have the outline ready? Do you have everything ready but, you did not yet push the publish button?

It does not matter. As long as people cannot get to it, it doesn't exist. It is no use to you or to your potential customers. It is an idea, a concept, a dream.

Getting your online course out doesn't have to be hard. Find out what keeps you from stepping up so you can see your course take shape and life.

Do not try to be perfect

One of the biggest hurdles in building your course is to try and make it perfect. You start putting your ideas on paper, you have a layout, you change, you add, you subtract, you twist and turn but you do not finish.

Somehow you remain not satisfied. You feel like you need to dig deeper, get more information, make sure that all is right and all you basically do is procrastinate. Yes, you can procrastinate by doing. Procrastination is delaying an action and the only action important here is to get your course out.

So, why is it not happening? It is FEAR.  Judgement? Failure? Fear of success?  As long as it is not out there you are still in control, the day you hit the publish button, you are not anymore. It is out there and you have to trust that it is finding its way, a bit like a child that you let go out in the world.  The same way you hurt a child who is ready to leave and you keep it back, you hurt yourself when you keep your "brain child" back. You did everything you could, now you have to let it go.

So, there's what you need to do.

Get a "starter version" of your course out for a lower price. You launch it to your list. If you do not yet know how to get people on your list, you can read this post later.

Launch your "starter version":

  • You get over this HUMONGOUS threshold and launched your first course.
  • Show people what you have to offer on a smaller scale.
  • Get feedback by doing surveys and you can improve your course.
  • Now that it is out there, all you need to do is improve it, deepen it.
  • Start putting people in the hero's journey (read here about the hero's journey and why it is so important), meaning you getting started helps others getting started as well.

Don't talk.  - ACT!  Don't say.  - SHOW! Don't promise. -  PROVE!

You might argue that people who buy your "starter version" of a course will get a less value then if you had taken more time. Well usually your students remain life time students.

  • 1
Your students invest in you by trusting you with your starter course.
  • 2
    They pay less money.
  • 3
    Students give you valuable feedback.
  • 4
You use the feedback to improve your course.
  • 5
The improvements are integrated in the course.
  • 6
Meanwhile the course can be sold at a higher price.
  • 7
Students who bought your starter course will get the upgrades for free.
  • 8
    This is a win-win situation.

I do urge you to sit down and see if you are ready to get that first course out. Michelangelo did not start with the Sistine Chapel, he had started way before that showing his oeuvre.

This search for perfection, which is nothing else than a kind of procrastination brings us directly to the next point.

The Impostor Phenomenon

Get your online course out

Carl Richards

The Impostor Phenomenon or Impostor Syndrome is the feeling that your achievements are not real or that you do not deserve praise or success.

It is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts his/her accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a fraud.  Individuals with impostor syndrome incorrectly attribute their success to luck. They also might believe they deceive others into thinking they are more intelligent than they perceive themselves to be.  Impostor syndrome affects both men and women equally.

How does this apply?

Most of you have hobby, a skill or knowledge that you acquired over time, be it through study, self-study or due to difficulties life threw at you. You found ways to increase your value by doing things you enjoyed or things that helped you out of a difficult situation. You are growing and you are at a point where you are able to share your knowledge with other people and maybe also get paid for it.

But: Wait a minute...

Who gave you the authorization to do that?

What are you thinking?

Do those questions come to mind? I believe they do. They come to mind of people like Maya Angelou, Albert Einstein and a number of presidents finding themselves in the Oval Office.

If you do have this nagging doubts in your mind, just be aware of it. Be aware that it has nothing to do with the quality of your work and everything with the very subjective way you judge yourself. It won't just go away but realizing it will help. Realizing that you are in good company will help, too. In the video below, the author gives you some tricks to help out. I believe that a way to get over it is to be in action. Do what you need to do and do it as good as you can which gets us again to the first point of this post.

What is the Impostor Syndrome?

Check this short TEDEd video from Elisabeth Cox out, it gives you a great explanation and you can see if they are talking about you.

Now that you are aware that this might be something you are dealing with, you know that you are not alone and you have some tools to counter this.

As I mentioned above, this brings us right back to our 1st point. Launching your starter course will help you tackle this impostor feeling. Remember when they talk about positive feedback in the video. When you launch the course you will get constructive feedback and it will help you build trust within yourself. 1. May I simply say what a relief to uncover a person that truly knows what they’re talking about over the internet.
You actually realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important.
More people ought to read this and understand this
side of your story. I can’t believe you’re
not more popular because you most certainly have the gift.

  2. Good day! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance
from an established blog. Is it very difficult to set
up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out
pretty fast. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure
where to start. Do you have any points or suggestions? Thank you

    1. Hi, I believe it is easiest to use WordPress. It is what I use and it is what I know. It depends if you want to make money with your blog or not. If not, is great. If yes you need and hosting. Otherwise, you cannot build your list.
